APSW Paint Department

Today we're going to concentrate on our Paint Department. Its been mentioned to us that they've been neglected on the web site, looking back, they have been. So, here's their time to shine! Initially formed in 1963, Autoparts dealt only in major car parts such as batteries, clutches and braking components etc. However, during the great 1970's Welsh rugby era it was realised that automotive paint and refinshing products were a whole new entity in itself and so, the Autoparts (S.Wales) Ltd. paint department was born. Throughout the years, Autoparts have had many talented paint specialists work in their paint department, none more competent or experienced than the current team...

Meet Glyn our Paint Technition. Gyln first got into car respraying when he was 16 and later took a career as a sprayer for 25 years. After knowing all refinshing techniques inside out, he felt that the next logical step was to work with paint and offer technical advice to others. Having been with us for over 2 years, we can confidently say what Glyn doesn't know about car paint, isn't worth knowing.

Nick Porter has been with Autoparts for 5 years, starting in the paint room he is now the Sales and Marketing Manager, specifically for the paint department. Over the years, many paint schemes have come and gone through APSW, but one manufacture has always been in our portfolio, PPG, mainly due to its quality. Currently, along side PPG we have Scott Warren and Lechler Coatings. Based in Pittsberg, USA, PPG are one of the worlds largest chemical manufactures, from the rubber on the soles of your shoes to extremely durable paint on cars and aircraft.

In the past 10 years it has been identified by the Government that VOC's (Volatile Organic Compounds) are bad for the atmostphere. In short, this means that from January 2007, all automotive paint needs to be water based - read our article on VOC's and the automotive industry here. PPG, being the worlds biggest manufacturer approached and developed a water based solution months previous, as well as Scott Warren and Lechler Coatings (the main reason for us taking on these manufacturers.) For several months we have been supplying some of our customers with water based paint in readiness for the change in law, we can safely say Autoparts are ready for the change.

As Enviromental laws have progressed so has technology. The APSW Paint Department have always had synchronised mechanical mixing machines and digital scales, but our latest batch of mixing scales put them to shame! As you may/may not know, the difference in variations of the colour 'black' could be as little as 2 grams of 'yellow'. Meaning that pouring 2 grams of paint from a 5 Litre tin onto a digital scales (sensitive enough to register a draft of wind) can sometimes be stressful. As a concequence, accidents do happen from time to time... 3 grams of yellow instead 2 grams for example. Something as little as this could be the difference between chalk and cheese and we would have to start over! Our new scales compensate for this, taking pressure off the mixer. If he pours 3g instead of 2g, the machine simply recalculates the quantities of all other colours required in the mixture to obatin the exact colour needed whether it be 0.5 Litres, 5 Litres or an aerosol spray. Phew!

In the upcoming weeks we will be discussing the rolls of the APSW Paint Department and what they can offer you.
