Autoparts are now taking on Corteco, providing a range of torsional vibration dampers that have traditionally only been available from main agent dealerships. The power impulses of an engine result in a torsional vibration in the crankshaft. A torsional vibration damper (TVD) mounted on the front end of the crankshaft controls this vibration. A TVD has many aliases, torsional vibration damper, decoupled pulley and crankshaft pulley. If the torsional vibration is not controlled, the crankshaft might break at certain operating speeds.
Two typesThere are two types of TVD. The traditional style fitted to most petrol engines that will tend to last the life of the engine, and a decoupled TVD designed especially for the modern diesel engines. The decoupled pulley is exposed to high vibration levels in a diesel engine as opposed to petrol engine cars. These extra stresses mean the pulley will not last for the life of the engine and should be inspected and replaced if faulty. As a result of the harsh working environment and the essential nature to the life of a diesel engine, the TVD should be replaced at 60,000 miles, and inspected for damage after accidents. The precision engineering and balance characteristics make it particularly susceptible to accident damage. Extensive DamageFailure to replace a worn or damaged pullley can result in the belt tensioner, belt ot even the crankshaft itself being compromised. This may lead to extensive damage of a engine at great expense. A smooth running TVD will alos reduce the stresses and strains on the other auxillary items in the engine compartment, allowing them to work more efficiently. A correctly functioning TVD also has the added benefit of lowering noise levels of the engine and amaking the cabin of the vehicle quieter and more pleasant for the occupants. Replacement products need to be of the highest quality because the TVD is vital to keeping the crankshaft and engine working properly. Each TVD pulley from Corteco has been individually balanced to ensure the correct reconance. This process can be likened to having a cars wheels balanaced, and as to the life of the tyres this process is critical to the TVD. All TVD's come with fitting instructions detailing the exact torque settings required for each model. It is also recommended that the bolt fixing the TVD be replaced. A previously torqured bold should not be reused. Corteco has an established range of crankshaft pulleys, offering 53 pulleys covering over 4 million diesel engine cars in the UK car parc. The company is commited to constantly improving and updating the range, and there is an update every few months. Over the next 12 months it is planned to release a further 15 part numbers into the marketplace. A full catalogue is also provided, detailing the make, models and, most importantly of all, the engine code data to which each pulley is fitted.
